MVRDV has designed a new facade for Bulgari’s flagship store in Bangkok. Located on the ground floor of IconSiam, one of Asia’s largest shopping malls, the project marks the second step in MVRDV’s partnership with the luxury brand after Bulgari’s flagship Kuala Lumpur store in 2018. Bulgari Bangkok flagship store opened in 2019, with the gradual easing of the epidemic policy, people can again enjoy the fun of shopping here.
▼ Overview
In the design of the new Bvlgari store, MVRDV is constantly thinking, adding a modern touch to the classic image. The Italian brand, which has been around for more than a century, stands for charm and creativity, interpreting the timeless beauty of Roman art. With “heritage” as its starting point, MVRDV’s design draws inspiration from Bulgari’s first store in Rome. This 1905 shop, located on Via dei Condotti, is distinguished by its striking and distinctive cornices. MVRDV applied these cornices to the design of the Bulgari flagship store in Bangkok, incorporating asymmetrical patterns and innovative materials through the exploration of different combinations.

The project adds an elegant landscape to IconSiam Mall, which stands out in the high-end shopping district where luxury goods are clustered. The cornice pattern of the shop facade is made of brass and inlaid with various glass. The mall elevator is facing the storefront, and the golden scenery will impress the shoppers.

Different colors and transparencies of the Windows are adapted to the internal functions. The display Windows on the first floor of the store are completely transparent, and the two upper floors are strategically placed with opaque glass to ensure the privacy of the VIP rooms. The soft light enveloped the window, showing the charm of the product and also highlighting the brand logo of Bulgari. Jacob van Rijs, founder of MVRDV, said: “The design brings the life of Rome to Bangkok. We are working on several projects with Bulgari in parallel, all of which are designed using high-quality basic materials such as natural stone, coloured glass, copper and gold. These stores show a distinctive local character and have the unique Bulgari brand logo.”

MVRDV’s first Bulgari flagship store opened in Kuala Lumpur in 2018 with a unique material facade. The concrete floor is carved with a crisscrossed texture of golden resin, mimicking the appearance of marble. As the golden veins light up at night, a very different landscape emerges. Earlier that year, MVRDV also designed an installation for Bulgari at the Milan Furniture Fair, which translates the brand’s famous serpentine logo through vaulted mirrored rooms.
